Gender Roles and Stereotypes
I believe stereotypes are a very common thing in this decade but still might be over spoken of. Society has dedicated more time calling these stereotypes out and claiming they should stop occurring yet ignoring the fact they are not as popular now.
Everyday society is learning to be more open-minded and bringing everyone together no matter what size, color or way people can be different. We started to accept people as they were born and begun breaking the rules culture has given us, these past social norms are become less common as there is no more pressure for ‘fitting in’ with the rest. We are constantly learning from the people around us and the fact they come from different places, think in different ways, speak different languages, only teach us more about the world and make us more interested in meeting new people.
Social media has overly spoken of this subject when its not even relevant at this point when most millenials have been growing up being well educated about how we have no right to put stereotypes. There is, of course, the obvious way some people are as they seem because of were they come from. And some do count these as stereotypes, all though it is all really just culture. For example when people say ‘Mexicans eat tacos and like spicy food’, because of the way they were raised eating like this, yes most Mexicans might do. But gender roles as ‘only boys play soccer’ or ‘only girls dance ballet’ are almost nonexistent these days, as everyone is playing either together or in separate teams
Statistics might say 95% of domestic violence is from a man to a woman, but there are thousands of men who wont speak up to the women violence for the main ‘masculinity’ reason. Everyone chooses to focus on what they want to, and most of the times it is because they will always put the woman as the weaker one who has to be allowed to do a mans job and get payed the same, while they get payed maternity leave and must understand the obvious different between man and women. Its not a thing of gender roles, sometimes it’s just human nature.
